Escape to Cancun

Don't underestimate the wisdom of the college set. When they dub a place worthy of a spring break invasion, it has to have certain attributes- mainly sun and fun. The same attributes, in other words, that you want for your own getaway. The lesson is simple: avoid Cancun in March when the place is overrun by the hedonistic young. But any other time of year, by all means vaya y disfrute - go and enjoy. Not, of course, that you'll need Spanish to do so. Cancun is Mexico made easy ... more >

One Minute Guide: Huatulco, Mexico

Your Quick & Easy Guide to Huatulco, Mexico

Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent god of Mesoamerica, is said to have appeared on the Pacific coast of southern Mexico around 2,000 years ago and planted a piece of wood in the shape of a cross on the beach. That visit gave the spot a name: Huatulco, the Place Where the Wood Is Adored, as well as its first taste of foreign tourism. Re-discovered in recent years, Huatulco (wah-tool-co), one of Mexico's newest resort projects, is quickly on its way to rivaling the country's better known recreation zones of Cancun and Acapulco. With each new resort development, planners experiment with and perfect their designs, and Huatulco has benefited from its predecessors. ... more >

The Riviera Maya: Cancun's little brother grows up

It's what you don't see that makes this place so special. No hotels, no restaurants, no discos, no shopping malls. They're all here, of course - this is Mexico's largest resort area. But when you're driving down this 130-mile stretch of the Yucatan Peninsula, you mostly see an untouched tropical paradise edging the azure waters of the Caribbean. That's the whole idea. Local laws cap the height of the hundreds of hotels and other buildings scattered along the beaches at three stories. That's low enough to keep them hidden from the highway by a half-mile-wide buffer zone of dense jungle and palm trees. What's more, the resorts tend to be far apart, thanks to another law that restricts development to only 5 percent (10 percent in special cases) of an owner's land. ... more >
