Cruising "America's Galapagos" : Touching Whales in the Baja

When asked what single nature cruise is the most spectacular on Earth, we have a ready answer: a cruise of the Galapagos, located six hundred miles off the coast of Ecuador. But the Galapagos are far away, expensive to explore and congested with tour groups. Fortunately there's another choice that is nearer at hand, far less crowded and every bit as extraordinary: the "American Galapagos" located along western Mexico's Baja Peninsula. And while the Baja has no mammoth Galapagos turtles, it offers an even larger resident, the gray whales who winter here and who, when conditions are right, come right up to the boat and offer their enormous heads for a hands-on experience unlike any other. ...

A Viking Exploration of Europe
Through the rivers and heart of history...
Perhaps it was our Scandinavian heritage that drew him to the Viking River Cruises name, but when my husband, Roger, was looking for a way to celebrate my 50th birthday, he came upon a trip including Austria, Germany and the Netherlands that seemed ideal. Travel was a perfect present for me, and a cruise meant his not having to drive, carry suitcases, or concern himself with the logistics of travel. Little did he know that this journey was to become one of our most cherished memories. I didn't learn about it until a few days before departure. In addition, nearly every shore excursion was included in the price of the trip. All we had to do was to show up, sit back, and enjoy. ...

Windjamming Plain and Fancy

There is something quite extraordinary about heading "down east" across Maine's Penobscot Bay with a full set of sails on a brilliant fall day. There is something equally special about sailing southwest in the Mediterranean, along the Cote d'Azur, the Balearic Islands, the Costa del Sol, and over to North Africa at the same time of year. My wife, Hedy, and I just experienced both this past autumn. The first trip was on an old wooden schooner called "Mercantile;" the second on a sleek sailing cruise ship, the "Wind Surf." Both are windjammers ...

Take an Alaskan Cruise This Summer
By: Mandy Karlik
Summer is Alaskan cruise season, and despite the enormous popularity of this particular destination, there are still some bargains to be found. Although it's known for glaciers and polar bears, going to Alaska is a bit like going on safari. This state is 65% national park, national forest, or national wildlife preserve. In fact, only one percent of this gigantic state (3.5 million lakes!) is privately owned. The result is lots of unspoiled natural habitat for creatures ranging from the bald eagle to the black bear. You can't beat the fishing; photographers will find this place a paradise. You can see moose, elk, wolves, different types of bears, and all kinds of fish. An Alaskan cruise is also one of the best ways to see ...
