A Retreat from Mother Nature
Record low temperatures are sweeping across the US. Just the other day, a friend from the great Northeast shared with me his experience of ice-picking his car and shoveling out his parking spot in front of his house. Here in Florida, where I reside, record breaking temperatures are also occurring…record high temperatures.
Orlando might be a big draw for visitors to this 447-mile peninsula, but there is more to this place then just a famous mouse. Florida has more then 1,000 miles of beaches, major airports near each city, inexpensive airfare to get here, this is the destination for those who thirst for the fun-in-the-sun atmosphere.
With fabulous beaches, sizzling nightlife, glorious weather that you have come to expect in Florida; and throw some A-listers spotting, like Will Smith & Jennifer Lopez, and Miami is one place that has all your vacation needs…and wants. The night life keeps going strong here till 5am; this is a perfect destination for couples, friends or a family stop on their Florida vacation.
Go over to Lummus Park which opens (surprise, surprise) at 5am. You can watch the sun rise and get your second chance at watching some celebrities as some of them frolic in the surf, play volleyball or rollerblade on the boardwalk. Or, if you want to bring along the kids, check out Matehson Hammock Park. A nice scenic drive in Miami where the kids could go swimming and you can find yourself a nice shaded spot under a tree and watch the windsurfers.
When you get hungry, a wide variety of places await to temp your palette. Go into the Melting Pot, a eatery dedicated to making fondue one of the four food groups. They use kirshwasser, a type of brandy, and according to some patrons makes the cheese fondue magic. This place is a bit on the pricey side, and if you plan on eating a whole meal, you could be there for about 3 hours. If your looking for a place with a little more local flavor, then hop on down to Islas Canarias Restaurant and have yourself a Cuban sandwich.
If you like the nightlife, baby, then there isn’t too many places that can beat Cavas, a wine bar with an endless variety of wines. The ambience is both cozy and modern and if you are a wine lover, then this is the place to be…and even if you’re not, you’ll soon realize why there are so many of us. A nice self-service type of idea, this place is great for a group of friends or just for two.
Of course, there is the beaches of Miami – and we all know that South Beach tops the list. But if your looking for some other beaches that aren’t as popular, check out Virginia Key. This place gives you a feel of being in the Keys or the Bahamas, yet you can drive in from the metropolis or take the monorail (and who doesn’t like to take the monorail?) After your day at this restored beach, you can go over to Jimbo’s Place for a drink. Don’t expect too much from this place, just cheap drinks and a place to unwind.
If your planning on coming down to Miami, there are a few great deals going on right now. Some great deals to look at include the Clinton Hotel, the South Beach Plaza and the Riviera Hotel - all on South Beach. These are just a small few of hotels that are offering some great savings and some bonuses. A whole list of great hotels with some great deals can be seen here.
